What the Cage Pearl Cascade Is
The Cage Pearl Cascade is one of REPIOR’s most structurally complex pieces: a non-piercing body jewellery item that uses a wire cage construction to hold a central pearl element at the contact point, with a cascading chain extension. The cage must be precise enough to hold the pearl securely, open enough to allow the pearl to be seen clearly, and made to a tension that stays consistent across the life of the piece — without welding, without glue, entirely through the manipulation of the wire.
The Process
Stage one — the wire. Surgical steel wire is cut to length and pre-shaped against a mandrel. The curve must account for how the wire will move when the cage is formed — a calculation made by feel after years of making, not by measurement.
Stage two — the cage. The wire sections are worked into the cage form by hand, each crossing point wrapped and locked. A cage that is slightly off will not hold the pearl correctly, and the error is only visible once the pearl is placed.
Stage three — the pearl. Each pearl is individually selected for size, lustre, and surface quality. We use only those that meet the standard of the finished piece.
Stage four — the cascade. The chain extension is assembled and attached. Length, weight, and drape are tested against the body before the piece is finished.
Why We Make This Way
Cage construction is slower than almost any alternative method. It cannot be scaled or automated. Each piece takes the time it takes. We make this way because the result is not achievable any other way. The cage that holds by geometry alone — no filler, no adhesive, no quick fix — is the piece.
